Remarkable Performance Development: Making Performance Management Really Work
by Kevin Eikenberry and Steve Johnston
Most organizations today recognize that performance management is a maligned process. All-too-often do we hear employees complain that the annual review is stressful and the feedback vague, leaving them with no clear direction on how to perform better. And they're not alone. Supervisors alike do not favor the process either, commonly stating there is little time to complete reviews, that the process is uncomfortable and the forms are difficult to use.
Some organizations have tested and adopted new processes, but most, in the end, limp along, knowing they want to make the performance management process better, but lack the resources and political capital to change it.
The good news is that the ideas and practices shared in this programme are applicable no matter your organization's current approach. The tools and techniques provided allow leaders to make significant and important change within the confines of existing systems, offering ways to implement a proven and reliable process for ongoing, improved performance that has real results. Remarkable Performance Development is the foundation to changing the mindset, language and most importantly behaviors of leaders so that real performance development can occur whatever the current or future performance management process might be in your organization.
HOW IT WORKS
It is designed to help individuals modify or enhance the current performance management process in their organization with the goal of helping the organization to attain desired results and helping employees achieve their fullest potential by providing leaders with the right tools and approaches.
Remarkable Performance Development helps take the discussion away from "fixing" what's wrong (a common approach) and onto forward-looking, dynamic conversations that focus on setting meaningful standards with a developmental orientation.
Through a series of practical activities, supported by short video sequences demonstrating common aspects of the performance experience, the programme works to move people away from the one-shot meeting and onto a living, breathing process for getting the best out of direct reports and others.
Learning Outcomes
- Apply a more productive mindset to traditional performance management.
- Identify and set goals and measurements of performance that matter.
- Create greater ownership of work.
- Conduct productive discussions that use the past as context, but focus on the present and future.
- Hold employees accountable.
- Enhance employee productivity.
Uses and Applications
It can be delivered in modular form (one piece at a time) or as a complete learning experience as you are improving these processes in your organization. It can also be included as a component of an ongoing leadership or management programme.
This programme is practical in nature – the techniques and approaches outlined come from the long and varied experience and practice of the authors in working with organizations and leaders around the world. It is designed for immediate application and use, not for solely educational purposes.
